My Internship with Dunn Pellier Media, Inc.
I've had such an incredible experience working as an intern at Dunn Pellier Media, Inc., a health & wellness PR firm based in Los Angeles. I started as a remote intern in the fall of my junior year at Elon, which quickly taught me how to balance + manage my time between DPM, my full class load, and extracurriculars. I applied my knowledge from the classroom and existing experience working at Live Oak Communications, Elon's very own student-run agency. During this portion of my internship, I learned the basics of media relations including how to forge authentic + organic connections between our clients and the appropriate media outlets, the importance of researching journalists/producers/outlets, and staying up to date on industry trends.
I was thrilled when they asked me to continue working for them into the summer -- especially with the uncertainty that COVID-19 brought, I was so grateful for the chance to continue learning from the best in the biz. This next phase of my internship with DPM facilitated true growth in my pitch writing + creative expertise. It turns out, the onset of the pandemic created for an unprecedented opportunity for fitness/wellness brands and experts to offer their guidance and knowledge. In turn, I was able to work on various pitches and projects, including writing one that landed our client, Dr. Christian Gonzalez, a segment on KTLA 5 Morning News:
I worked with my supervisor, the CEO of the firm, and other publicists on the team to understand our clients' unique goals, which guides us as we position them within the larger health + wellness space. I cannot share most of the work I created due to client confidentiality, but as a side project, I was asked to create a "Masterclass" all about pitch-writing and follow-ups for the new interns. This required a lesson plan and coordinating with the team to set up a virtual presentation. Here is my lesson plan:
